Promoting Volunteerism: From Classroom to Community
The Volunteer Centre, Community Services Council of Newfoundland and Labrador has developed a classroom-friendly information package designed to promote the importance of volunteers and volunteerism among K-12 students.
Regional Volunteer Resources for Voluntary Organizations In Newfoundland and Labrador
One of the most urgent recommendations following from Community Services Council research and consultation with voluntary, community-based organizations throughout the province is that volunteer supports, services and resources need to be made available regionally.
Volunteering Through Time - Newfoundland and Labrador Exhibit
This provincial exhibit celebrates the contribution of volunteers in Newfoundland history. It was developed as the Newfoundland component of a national exhibit which has been touring Canada since March 2000.The national exhibit was developed by Volunteer Canada with particular emphasis on the themes of health and social services, amateur sports, culture and heritage, youth, environment and emergency response. The Newfoundland and Labrador Exhibit is now available to groups and organizations across the province for IYV 2001.
Volunteer Week 2003 - "Volunteers Make Communities" Join the celebration!
Volunteer Week 2003 celebrated the important contributions that volunteers made to communities throughout the province. It was a special time set aside to acknowledge their work and say thank you.
Volunteer Week 2002 - "Experience Matters!" Join the celebration!
National Volunteer Week 2002 was a special time set aside in April to thank and honour the people who donated their time and energy to their fellow citizens. The work of volunteers impacts vitually every aspect of society, including health, education, social services, youth, culture, sports and recreation, the arts and the environment.
In Newfoundland and Labrador the Community Services Council, Volunteer Centre takes the lead role in promoting National Volunteer Week.
International Year of Volunteers 2001
The Community Services Council, Volunteer Centre took the lead for organizing the International Year of Volunteers in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Volunteer Centre provided non-profit organizations with the opportunity to post IYV events online and improved access to much needed information.
Our Millennium
Over 200 gifts were registered in Newfoundland and Labrador. When the Our Millennium Registry closed on midnight, December 31, 2000 - 6,558 projects, involving over 4.6 million Canadians, were registered from 794 communities across Canada. A thank you goes out to all Canadians who participated at both the national and provincial levels. The Our Millennium web site and registry remains online. You can still visit the web site and search the national registry to see the fabulous projects that have been registered. In May 2001, the web site and national registry became part of the permanent collection of the National Archives. Be sure to check it out at

Past Youth Initiatives
Youth Mobilizing Youth
Young people were hired through this project to develop work skills, leadership experience, and other transferable skills related to working in the non-profit sector.
Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) July - August 2002
YVC 2002 was a way for youth aged 11 to 18 to help others while gaining valuable experience. Participating youth were able to learn about their community by engaging in a variety of challenging and worthwhile service projects. These projects were designed by youth volunteers and non-profit agencies in the community. Volunteers chose projects in conjunction with the sponsoring agency and worked together to achieve the desired goal. This program was affiliated with the
Youth Volunteer Corps of Canada
Volunteering 2 Work! Volunteering 2 Work was designed to encourage youth volunteers to develop job related skills and knowledge, work related experience, and employment networks by volunteering in their community.
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is an annual event organized by Youth Service America that celebrates, recognizes and mobilizes the year-round contributions of young people to build their communities and their world through voluntary service.
Generation V
A pilot project hosted in St. John's by Volunteer Canada. The Generation V Project involved four interns trained in volunteer management that were placed with various non-profit agencies to help them develop youth volunteer programs. (Placements included: Canadian Diabetes Association; Canadian Red Cross; Froude Avenue Community Centre / Frontier College; General Hospital Corporation; Nfld & Lab Science Centre; MUN Botanical Gardens and the Association for New Canadians.)
