How many nonprofit organizations are there in Newfoundland and Labrador?
The Community Services Council NL has a listing of more than 5,000 voluntary, community-based organizations in this province. This list is by no means complete. These groups focus on many different areas such as children and youth, environmentalism, heritage and arts, economic development, tourism and seniors resources, to name a few.
Why do I get an income tax receipt when I donate to some nonprofit organizations?

Why is volunteering important?
Volunteerism is sometimes described as the glue that holds society together. Critical to the survival of non-profit groups, volunteers help address community needs that would not otherwise be met. The voluntary sector builds, nurtures and contributes hugely to the quality of life in our communities, providing opportunities for people to work together on common issues. Volunteers come from all sections of the population. Because participation is based upon personal initiative, the voluntary sector is highly democratic and dynamic.

There are many organizations looking for committed volunteers. Ask a friend, a neighbour, a teacher, a community leader. Are their employment opportunities in the voluntary sector?
Yes. While many organizations rely heavily, or even exclusively, on volunteers, many have paid staff as well. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the sector employs an estimated 20,000 23,000 people. Nonprofits also support youth employment by hiring in full and part-time positions, summer placements and youth internship programs. Young people typically find jobs in sports and recreation, arts and culture, health services, fundraising and other fields.
