The Town of Placentia launched its celebration of 500 years of French presence in Newfoundland as part of their 2004 New Year’s festivities. Placentia has the honour of being the provinces’ former French capital and its residents were more than happy to be chosen to commence the yearlong commemoration of Newfoundland’s rich French heritage.
The launch started with the Placentia Gala de Plaisance at the Star of the Sea Hall on New Year’s Eve. Distinguished guests, such as Moncton’s Consul General of France, were in attendance for a night filled with regional music and history. A bilingual mass, conducted by Reverend Lucien Fisher, Bishop of St. Pierre and Miquelon, was held on New Year’s Day, followed by a Community Friendship Luncheon at a local restaurant. The four-part celebration ended with a fireworks display near the base of Castle Hill National Historic Site.
The New Year’s celebrations were the start of a whole year of upcoming events for the Town of Placentia. The 2004 Placentia Planning Committee, along with the Placentia Heritage Advisory Committee, are also planning archaeological digs, theatre presentations, and Rediscover Placentia events throughout the year.
Thes events in Placentia are the beginning of a year of celebration throughout Newfoundland & Labrador and Atlantic Canada.
