Dr. Nancy Sullivan is an Associate Professor and the Graduate Officer in the School of Social Work at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her research interests lie within the scope of social justice for disadvantaged populations, most specifically children, youth, and families. A recent study, conducted with Dr. Michelle Sullivan and Dr. JoAnne Zamparo, in relationship with the Values Added CURA and funded by Health Canada Atlantic Region, sought to identify factors that facilitate or impede engagement of marginalized youth in community-based social policy work. A paper on this project, entitled "Creating Connections among Disadvantaged Youth toward Participation in Policy Development for Social Change" was presented by Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Sullivan in Boston in October 2003 at the annual symposium of the international Association for the Advancement of Social Work with
Groups (AASWG). A participatory action study on Family Group Conferencing also has been completed in collaboration with Dr. Grahame Meredith and Dr. Deena Mandell within the context of several child welfare agencies in Toronto, focused on the development and evaluation of this method of planning for the care of children in which the family serves as the primary decision maker. Field education in social work is an additional interest, on which a provincial study was undertaken last year with Dr. Donna Hardy Cox and Ms. Susan Murray of the Memorial School of Social Work, and on which a national study is planned.
Dr. Sullivan has made numerous contributions to the field of social work with groups literature, and has served as Vice President of AASWG. She sits currently on the Board of Accreditation of the Canadian Association of Schools of Social Work.
