Dr. MacDonald graduated from the Grace General Hospital School of Nursing in St. John's, and worked as staff nurse and administrative nursing supervisor of the Intensive Care and Intensive Coronary Care Units at the Grace. She received her Bachelor of Nursing and her Master of Nursing from Memorial University of Newfoundland, School of Nursing. Since 1989 she has worked at Memorial in the areas of cardiology, surgery, medicine and leadership. She has taught advanced nursing practice in the undergraduate, graduate and post-RN programs. She has completed her PhD in Health Services from Walden University, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Sandra is currently Associate Professor, at MUN School of Nursing and her research interests are in program evaluation, cardiovascular health promotion and community health assessment. She has developed, implemented and evaluated
community health promotion programs for cardiovascular health and HIV/AIDS
awareness. Since 1997 she has been the Primary Investigator of 4 regional
community health studies across the island and in Labrador. These studies
assessed satisfaction with community health services, identified priority
community health concerns, assessed health beliefs and practices and created
a data base against which changes to community health services could be
evaluated. Within those studies, there is also data on "volunterism" such as
rating of influence of community groups on health, identification
os self-help groups in the community and questions on which groups
communitites would like to see started in their community. Dr. MacDonald also has
qualitative data on these areas as well (key informant telephone interviews and
focus group data).
