Dr. Larry Felt is Professor of Sociology at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Felt’s interests lie in rural social and economic development with particular interests in participative, sustainable resource management. A strong proponent of the community-based Volunteer Sector’s (CBVS) critical role, his work over the last thirty years has examined ways in which community and regionally-based volunteer organizations can assume meaningful roles in resource policy development and implementation, especially in the fishery sector. Dr. Felt has authored or co-authored four books and over seventy academic and popular papers on various aspects of local, volunteer-based participation ranging from how social capital formation is promoted at community and regional levels to strategies for utilizing local resource knowledge in conjunction with fisheries assessment science to build sustainable and participatory fisheries policy.
In addition to his academic activity, Dr. Felt is an active volunteer serving on numerous organizations. He is currently President of the Salmonid Council of Newfoundland and Labrador (SCNL), the largest federation of environmental and recreational angling associations in the Province promoting the sustainable use of the province’s freshwater fishery resources.
