Expanding Their Universe, Reshaping The Future
A pilot project of the Community Services Council and the MacMorran Community Centre, with funding from Clarica, the project aimed to address the importance of social inclusion in the lives of all school aged children and their families.
Expanding Their Universe, Reshaping the Future examined the barriers which exclude many children from participating fully in the educational experience, and will also seek to open up opportunities for children to participate more fully in recreational, cultural and other social opportunities.
In the spring of 2003, the Community Services Council of Newfoundland and Labrador (CSC) released the report Expanding Their Universe: Reshaping The Future - A report on the impact of school fees and fundraising on social inclusion. The report attempts to define how some children may be excluded from various school and extracurricular activities as a result of an inability to pay various fees and charges.
CSC carried out a study with the cooperation of the Avalon East School District to explore these issues. The research indicates school fees, charges for school supplies and specific activities and events, as well as fundraising activities are widespread and do indeed contribute to some children and youth feeling marginalized and excluded.
