Funding for charities for education on compliant fundraising practices

Involving Older Adults: Workshop for Community Organizations

Penelope Rowe discusses ‘mandatory volunteering’ plan in New Brunswick

The New Brunswick government is introducing volunteering as a high school graduation requirement. Since 2006, students in Newfoundland and Labrador have been contributing 30 hours of service to the community as part of a mandatory career development course. In this CBC Radio audio clip, students in NB offer their opinions, followed by an interview with Penelope Rowe of the Community Sector Council NL. Rowe speaks about the benefits and challenges of curriculum-based volunteer work.

Cabot Loop Volunteer Thank You Reception

Over 250 people attended the Cabot Loop Volunteer Week Reception at The Factory in Port Union on April 23. Sid Butt, Area (Link) Director with the Newfoundland and Labrador Seniors and 50 Plus Federation emceed the event which included entertainment, prizes and speeches.

The 2010 Annual St. John’s Volunteer Recognition Night was an evening to recognize the humble volunteers who form the backbone of many organizations. Approximately 200 people gathered together at the Sheraton Newfoundland Hotel to recognize how ‘Volunteers Connect Communities’. The event was hosted by Rogers TV hosts, Erin Sulley and Krissy Holmes.

The Southern Gazette: First regional volunteer celebration a success

Presentation and discussion on giving and volunteering in Atlantic Canada

In its 2009 budget, the Government of Canada announced its intention to establish a national task force dedicated to the issue of financial literacy. The Task Force on Financial Literacy will provide advice and recommendations to the federal Minister of Finance on a national strategy to strengthen the financial literacy of Canadians. A series of public sessions will seek out the thoughts and perspectives of Canadians over the next several months with a session in St. John's on April 22.

The Community Services Council NL (CSC) is forming a Working Group to focus attention on this problem in Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundlanders have the highest level of sodium consumption in the world, according to an international study conducted in the mid-1980s. No wonder we are concerned!

Bring your story to the 2010 Olympic Games through digital storytelling project

Canada CODE (Cultural Olympiads Digital Edition) is a digital scrapbook and collaborative art project which will be presented on large public screens during the 2010 Winter Games. To encourage Canadians to tell their story, The National Film Board of Canada is holding workshops across Canada. As 2009 turns into 2010 charity board volunteers should turn their attention to the reporting requirements for which they are responsible. Every registered charity in Canada is required to file an annual report to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) within six months of the end of its fiscal year.

Vibrant Communities thanks Dancing Priests, Vibrant Friends, and Volunteers

On Thursday November 26th, Vibrant Communities held an event at The Lantern to thank everyone who helped make Dancing with the Priests a success. Dancing with the Priests was a gala fundraising event held on May 8, 2009 at Mile One Stadium in St. John's. A unique twist on 'Dancing with the Stars', Anglican ministers partnered with professional dance instructors and danced the night away to jive, Irish step dancing and other dance styles.


Student Work And Service Program (SWASP) success story in Grand Falls-Windsor

Amelia Boone completed a SWASP placement position in the summer, working with the Royal Canadian Legion in Grand Falls - Windsor: "As an Office Administration student at the College of the North Atlantic, my summer job allowed me to put to use the skills and knowledge I had learned the previous semesters in college. Participating in SWASP has been an excellent experience for me. Without SWASP, I would not have had the opportunity to meet the wonderful people I have during my placements, and would not have been able to work in positions that complement my studies so well."

Provincial Government to convene working group on insurance issues in the voluntary sector
