The Community Services Council Volunteer Centre partnered with the Northeast Avalon Strategic Social Plan (SSP) Committee and the Community Centre Alliance to host a luncheon on Thursday, January 23rd.
More than 40 representatives from various community-based groups came out to the Virginia Park Community Centre to meet with colleagues over lunch and listen to a brief presentation on the Community Accounts of the SSP.
Gillian Janes, Regional Planner for the Northeast Avalon SSP Steering Committee, was one of the organizers of this event. “Working with groups from the voluntary, community-based sector is a priority of the committee and we are very pleased to be part of this luncheon. It was a great opportunity to share ideas and provide an update on the Province's Strategic Social Plan. Greg Tucker’s introduction to the Community Accounts really got people interested in the excellent resource for planning and basically getting to know our communities better, “ said Gillian.
Amy Percy, Economic Development Coordinator for the Community Centre Alliance, believes that the Community Accounts will be an extremely useful resource for Community Centre staff working throughout the city. She and Janes first developed the idea for this learning luncheon and approached the Community Services Council Volunteer Centre for assistance in promoting the opportunity to a wider audience.
“People were very quick to register for this event,” says Peggy Matchim, Coordinator of the Volunteer Centre, “feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many indicated that they hope to see more of this type of event in the future.”
Community Accounts
Community Accounts is an online resource that provides a wealth of information on various social indicators at the provincial, regional, and community level. The site allows anyone to quickly and easily view and compare income, education, health, employment and other indicators throughout the province. It is easy to use and particularly relevant to community-based organizations working toward social and economic development.
