Volunteer Opportunities Information Service

Promotes volunteerism in general and provides specific information on volunteer opportunities in St. John’s to hundreds of individuals. Agencies list volunteer opportunities with the Centre and perspective volunteers can get that information through a personal interview, by a mailed brochure or through our website (www.csc.nf.net)

Youth Mobilizing Youth (Funded by HRDC through Youth Services Canada)

For the past three years a total of thirty-nine youth have worked in a total of ten different schools on the Avalon Peninsula mobilizing approximately 400 - 500 students from grades six through twelve to volunteers in projects in their schools and in their communities.

This year the Community Services Council has expanded the program to the Burin Peninsula and is involving an addition ten team members in five separate communities and schools.

Training

The Community Services Council, Volunteer Centre offers a variety of different training programs in St. John’s and around the province. In the past year it has offered:

  • Making the Most of Volunteer Resources (certificate program in volunteer coordination), in St. John’s, Gander, Corner Brook and on the Burin Peninsula. Local trainers have been trained for on going local delivery in Corner Brook and Gander.

Volunteer Week 2001

The Centre coordinates Provincial Volunteer Week. Included in the Week in 2000 were: the Provincial Opening; Youth Global Services Day; International Year of Volunteers 2001 Forum; and a reception at Government House. Approximately four hundred people attended the various events In addition the Centre provides support for events in communities all over the province.

Youth Programs

  • The Youth Volunteer Corps of St. John’s
    More than sixty youth volunteers ranging in age form eleven years to eighteen years volunteer in over twenty community agencies on a variety of different programs.
  • Youth Mobilizing Youth
    This HRDC funded Youth Services Canada Project ran in five schools from November 1988 to June 1999 around the Avalon and involved nine team members in encouraging school students to volunteer in their schools and communities. Fourteen different team members are currently running the program in six schools in St. John's, Torbay, Ferryland, Placentia and Whitbourne.
  • Generation V (V = Volunteer)
    Four interns in this pilot program for Volunteer Canada assisted a number of agencies in St. John's to develop volunteer opportunities for youth in their programs. A total of approximately 630 were involved in volunteer work through Community Services Council Youth Initiatives.

Special Projects/Events

  • International Year of Volunteers 2001
    The Community Services Council, Volunteer Centre was designated the lead organization for IYV2001 in Newfoundland and Labrador with support and funding from the province through the Strategic Social Plan.
  • IYV2001 Official Launch
    was held on December 5th with a dinner for 150 with volunteers from around the province in attendance.
  • Screening Volunteers in Sports Recreation
    The Centre worked in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Foundation, the Newfoundland and Labrador Parks and Recreation Association, and The Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Federation to encourage the appropriate screening of volunteers and paid employees in their systems.
  • Our Millennium
    The Centre was the provincial coordinating agency for national initiative of the Community Foundations of Canada called Our Millennium. The program encouraged formal and informal groups to make gifts of time, money, commitment and creativity to their communities in special recognition of the Millennium. Over 200 gifts were registered in this province.
  • Volunteering through Time
    The Centre hosted a traveling exhibit on the history of volunteerism in Canada from April 29 to May 8, 2000. This was a project of Volunteer Canada. The centre developed a local display on volunteers in Newfoundland and Labrador as part of the exhibit which will be available to groups and community museums during IYV2001.
  • Volunteers in Community Access Sites
    The Volunteer Centre was contacted by the Department of Education's Community Access Program, with funding from Industry Canada, to develop a resource kit for CAP sites in utilizing volunteers. The resource is being printed and distributed to CAP sites across Canada.

Other Activities (Staff)

  • The Centre worked with the Seniors Resource Centre on ABC’s Fraud Program.
  • A Centre staff person acted as a resource person to Volunteer Canada’s Volunteering Works project.
  • A Centre staff person worked with the City of St. John’s Youth Task Force.
  • A Centre staff person worked with the City of St. John’s Special Events Committee (during summer months)
  • The Volunteer Centre provided support to the Seniors Resource Centre’s Friendly Visiting Program.
  • The Volunteer Centre Supervisor serves on the City of St. John’s Senior’s Roundtable Initiative.
  • The Volunteer Centre Supervisor serves on the CCDA Community Capacity Task Force.
  • The Volunteer Centre Supervisor serves on the Board of the International Association for Volunteer Effort and Chaired its North American Steering Committee.
  • The Volunteer Centre Supervisor serves on the Advisory Committee for the Student Volunteer Bureau at Memorial.
  • The Volunteer Centre Supervisor served on the Urban CAP site committee through the Department of Education.
